Bullets fly
Explosions, all too familiar, sound off nearby
The color of war paints my mind
Rivers of red run deep, no end in sight
Gun in my hand
I’m prepared to fight.
To be honest,
I’d rather be in my own bed tonight.
I don’t do this for me
Instead, I wish for you to be free.
Panic floods my veins
These mental images inflict on me pain
I pull the gun to my shoulder
My brother loses the chance to grow older.
Tears stream down my face
How I wish to be free of this place.
I lift my head once more
Confidence and pride fill my core.
I raise up and let bullets fly
Reality makes me open my eyes.
I’m no longer trapped inside of my head
Rather, I’m laying in bed filled with dread
Sweat pours down my brow
My wife gives me comfort somehow.
The price you pay for freedom and pride
Memories remain of when bullets fly.
Today, I want to express my deepest and most sincere gratitudes toward our Veterans. I am so incredibly thankful to each and every single one of you for your service to this country. On days like this, you may not experience an outpouring of gratitude and for that, I’m sorry. You gave of your life, your freedom, and your time to make sure that we, at home, would be safe. Our indebtedness could never be summed up in words.
Thank you.
You are loved.
You are valued.
